New York Giants vs. Atlanta Falcons Week 15 2012

We’re officially getting down to the crucial games in the 2012-2013 NFL season, and a specific example of this type of game has to be this week’s match-up between the New York Giants and the Atlanta Falcons.  Both of these teams are looking like they could be playoff bound, but while one has locked up their spot in the Falcons at 11-2, the Giants are still fighting to hold on to the lead in the NFC East at 8-5, while the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys are hot on their tail at 7-6.  One slip up by the Giants and we could see them left on the outside looking in here.  The Falcons are coming off of a tough road loss to the Carolina Panthers last week, while the Giants knocked off the New Orleans Saints at home.  Kickoff for this one is at 1:00pm EST on Sunday.

The Giants looked very good against the Saints last Sunday, but in all honesty many teams have looked great against the Saints defense this year.  They’ve struggled to do much, and this week the Giants go INTO Atlanta to play, and life could be a whole lot tougher.  The Falcons are coming off of a loss, so the Giants are going to need to play some excellent football to get this win.  This means that Eli Manning will need to avoid turnovers and the Giants will need to keep that run game going with David Wilson or Ahmad Bradshaw (whichever is in the game/not injured).

The Falcons on the other hand are a scary team coming off of a loss.  With a team that has this type of firepower on the offensive side of the ball, you always have to be worried about the potential of them putting big points on the board.  Their defense has shown improvements as well, and I really don’t think they’ll have the kind of breakdowns that they had last week against Carolina this weekend in this big game of a game.  Expect Matt Ryan to lead the charge here, and I also think that a dark horse to have a big day here is going to be running back Jacquizz Rodgers, who has the type of speed that could kill the Giants on some screen passes out of the back field.

Anytime you can get a late season match-up between two potential playoff teams and teams who could contend for a Super Bowl you know it’s going to be a good time.  This one won’t be any different, but my edge here goes to the Falcons coming off of that loss and heading back to their home field.  I just can’t see Atlanta losing two straight this season, and I think that they are well-coached and led well by Matt Ryan.  With that being said, I’m expecting the bounce back and a four point win for Atlanta on Sunday afternoon.
